'Utopia'

'Utopia' is the debut recording of Tom Kerstens with his newly formed G Plus Ensemble. The group was created specifically for the recording of newly commissioned writing.

G Plus means guitar with something else. It is an evolving term. This can be guitar with other instruments, (e.g. the G Plus ensemble) or guitar with electronics (e.g. the three movements of The Third Fire). Both versions can be found in this recording. The G Plus ensemble here consists of two guitars, strings and percussion.

This instrumentation combined with the quality of recording offered by Real World in its atmospheric studio means that there can be real clarity and warmth to these recordings.

Green and blue and yellow too.

daffodil02.jpg

A taste of spring in Box today, salad in the sun and people basking on benches wherever you look.

Green is arriving at very high speed, blink and you've missed it.

Pioneering young Cellist is the new featured artist on B&W's Society of Sound

peter-gregson.jpg

Peter Gregson is an award winning cellist, composer and pioneer of contemporary music. His work has been performed widely in the UK and the US, at venues ranging from The Royal Albert Hall, London to The Ingleby Gallery in Edinburgh; from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles to Trinity Church, Boston. This has been recognized in being awarded the 2008 Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland award for music, and more recently, membership to the Courvoisier Future 500. He is the 2010/11 Creative in Residence at The Hospital Club, London.

The new album 'Terminal' was created in an intensive few days of furious recording at Real World Studios. Followed by an exhilarating mixing session. An outstanding album was created.

"A lot of these tracks were conceptualized in airport lounges, waiting to board planes and this was, initially, where the title for the album came from. The closing track was always going to be called "+" for reasons explained later, but my co-writer and producer Milton Mermikides pointed out that if the first track was called "-", then it also formed a battery terminal, and so it stuck." says Peter of his new album. And of the recording session he says "... it's been the highlight of my career to date, easily the most creative and inspirational week I've spent working,"

Peter Gabriel on Charlie Gillett

"I am extremely sad to hear about Charlie Gillett's death. He has been such a benign Godfather to so many artists who have fallen under the name of world music, as their first home on the radio, their record label and most of all, their champion.

Bumping into Charlie was always one of my regular delights at WOMAD. There are many artists around the world who owe a good slice of their income to Charlie's enthusiasms. His generous and good nature, fired by his passion, was a beacon of light in the music world and a rare and wonderful example to all of us involved". (Peter Gabriel)

2 'Scratch' 7 inch singles for Record Store Day

435847

Record Store Day on April 17th will see two 7" singles from the 'Scratch My Back' project available in independent record stores.

Real World will release the Peter Gabriel 'Book Of Love' and Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Field's 'Not One Of Us' double a-side, whilst Jagjaguwar will release Peter's 'Flume' and Bon Iver's 'Come Talk To Me' double A-side.

Peter's epic take on Bon Iver's Flume is paired with the enigmatically monikered Wisconsin singer-songwriter's interpretation of Come Talk To Me from 1992's Us. They're both astonishing, the latter initially wearing the light shades of bluegrass and calypso before building into something akin to gospel as it supplies seven minutes of deep spirituality.

Portico Quartet headline at The Barbican.

portico_barbican.jpg

A late start for some this morning in Box as we enjoyed a late return from our sharbang ride to hear Portico Quartet headlining at The Barbican.

Time Out call them their "fave post-jazz band" and after a great performance last night, we'd only want to delete 'fast becoming' from their description of the band..."their accessible sax-led groove-based pieces - that reference modern jazz, Phillip Glass and cool drum 'n' bass - now possess a darker melancholic edge as heard on their excellent second album 'Isla' (Real World). Combined with a new grittier confidence PQ are fast becoming a serious prospect live and on record."
